Used cars are a safer investment than new cars.

Every used car isn’t created equally, though… don’t get stuck with a clunker!

Watch out for these seven used car warning signs that could signal a REALLY bad deal.

1. The tires are in terrible shape.

Are there different types of tires on the vehicle? Cuts or tears in the rubber? Tread wearing thin? These are bad signs.

If a driver can’t be bothered to take care of their tires, then you can’t expect the rest of the vehicle to be in good condition.

2. The seller is in his or her 20’s.

If you’re a millennial, please don’t get mad at me. There are exceptions to this rule, but most young people don’t stay on top of preventive auto repairs. Can you blame them? It’s hard to juggle work, school, and the responsibilities of growing up at the same time.

3. The ad lacks details and/or sounds desperate.

There is no time limit on Craigslist, but the grammar on that site makes you wonder sometimes. If someone can’t tell the difference between “your” and “you’re,” don’t buy a car from them. Also look out for shady sales tactics. If you feel like they’re trying too hard, that’s probably a bad sign.

4. The car looks like it was in a demolition derby.

This one is a bit obvious, but hey, it’s worth mentioning. Unless you’re getting one heck of a bargain, I wouldn’t recommend buying a car that looks like it belongs in a junk yard.

5. The engine contains a mixture of oil and coolant.

Look for oil in the radiator. Look for coolant mixed with motor oil. Are either of those present? Don’t buy it. This is a glaring sign that the engine is dying. Replacing an engine can run up to $4,000. You don’t want to take that risk.

6. The dealer gets defensive when you ask questions.

Don’t let someone make you feel bad for asking “too many questions.” There is no such thing. Buying a car is a big investment. You should expect an in-depth account of every auto repair and traffic accident. Honest sellers are happy to address your concerns. If they dodge your questions, don’t believe a word they say.

7. The deal gives you a bad feeling that can’t be explained.

Your intuition is like a Spidey sense. Sometimes it sends alarms that can’t be explained, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t accurate. Even if your gut instinct is wrong, you’ll still feel nervous after the purchase. That would add lots of stress to your life. Never do business with someone you don’t trust. It will only lead to regret.
