1.3 million people die in traffic accidents every year. The sad part? Most of this suffering is 100% preventable. Please protect yourself. Here are seven things safe drivers don’t do.

1. They don’t drink and drive.

Safe drivers don’t drive drunk. If they get a buzz after three beers, they cut themselves off after two. If they choose to drink more, they call a cab. Alcohol can be fun, but use it responsibly.

2. They don’t check their phone.

Safe drivers don’t text and drive. If they have a hard time resisting the urge, they turn their phone off and put it away. It’s good to stay in touch with your friends, but no text is worth your life.

3. They don’t break the speed limit.

Safe drivers don’t floor the gas pedal. If they have a lead foot, they make use of their car’s cruise control system. Driving fast might save some time, but it isn’t worth the risk of getting a ticket.

4. They don’t take unnecessary risks.

Safe drivers don’t pretend to be a stunt driver. If they need to be somewhere by a certain hour, they leave with plenty of time to spare. No one likes to be late, but that’s better than having an accident.

5. They don’t push through exhaustion.

Safe drivers don’t drive beyond their limits. If they can’t keep their eyes open any longer, they pull over at a well-lit rest area so they can take a nap. Caffeine might provide a slight energy boost, but it won’t last.

6. They don’t engage in aggressive behaviors.

Safe drivers don’t lose their temper. If they get tailgated, honked at, cussed out, or cut off; they let it go. Revenge is fun to think about, but that doesn’t mean you should act out the fantasy playing in your head (trust me!).

7. They don’t neglect routine repair and maintenance.

Safe drivers don’t put off auto repair. If their tires are wore out, they get them replaced. If their breaks are weak and slow, they call a mechanic. It’s tempting to procrastinate when money’s tight, but they don’t do it, because they know a high speed blow-out can only end in disaster.
