America has a serious pothole problem.

Drivers all over the country are complaining about potholes… and for good reason! Potholes cost U.S. drivers $3 billion per year, according to a study by AAA.

Potholes don’t just make for a bumpy ride. They cause serious damage to your car. Driving over a pothole can puncture your tires, bend your wheels, and mess up your suspension system.

The cost of pothole-related repairs varies – for a ballpark estimate of specific car repairs, go to RepairPal (understand the price will vary depending on your location and other variables). The average cost is $300.

Ouch! You could take your partner and kid to Disney for that much money. Dealing with potholes is a pain in the butt, because our government is supposed to provide its citizens with safe roads and bridges. Mad? Write a letter to Congress and ask them to direct funding to road improvement projects.

Fortunately, all of this is preventable. Michelin was kind enough to provide me with this infograph. Following these tips will help you avoid potholes (or at least minimize the damage caused by them). Feel free to share this blog with your friends. Since potholes reach their peak in spring, I’m sure they will appreciate the advice! 🙂
